Earth Day may be celebrated on April 22, but at Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin, caring for our planet and community is something we celebrate every day.
Every donation, every thrifted find, and every recycled item helps keep usable goods out of landfills while supporting local programs that help people live, work, and thrive. From stable housing and job training to supported employment, your choices can create a lasting impact far beyond Earth Day.
Sustainability Starts with Small Actions
Sometimes the simplest actions can make the biggest difference. Choosing to donate instead of discard, shopping secondhand, or bringing reusable bags are easy ways to support a healthier planet every day.
At Goodwill, we believe sustainability is not just a one-day event. It’s a way of thinking about how we use resources, reduce waste, and support our communities.
That’s why Goodwill is often known as the original recycler of goods. For more than 120 years, long before Earth Day was first observed in 1970, reusing and repurposing items has been central to our mission.
Every Donation Does More GOOD
When you donate to Goodwill, you are doing more than clearing out clutter at home.
You are:
- helping keep usable items out of local landfills
- supporting a more sustainable circular economy
- funding local mission programs
- helping people access housing, training, and employment support
Last year alone, Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin diverted more than 16.7 million pounds from area landfills and helped provide programs and services to more than 2,000 people.
That means every bag of clothing, household item, or electronic device you donate helps create opportunities right here in our communities.
Follow the Three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
One of the easiest ways to make Earth Day part of everyday life is by following the three Rs.
- Reduce: Reduce waste by being intentional about what you bring into your home. Before buying something new, consider whether you truly need it or if you can find it secondhand. Shopping at Goodwill is a great way to reduce consumption while still finding quality items you love.
- Reuse: Give items a second life whenever possible. Donate gently used clothing, décor, kitchenware, books, and more so someone else can use and enjoy them. Even simple things like repurposing jars for storage or refreshing furniture with a DIY update can help extend the life of everyday items.
- Recycle: For items that can no longer be used, recycle responsibly. Being mindful about what goes into the trash helps keep more materials out of landfills.
Refresh Your Home and Donate During Spring Cleaning
Earth Day and spring cleaning go hand in hand. As you sort through closets, cabinets, and storage spaces this season, set aside gently used clothing, home décor, kitchenware, books, and electronics to donate to Goodwill.
It’s a simple way to refresh your home, reduce waste, and make a meaningful difference in your community.
Host a Neighborhood Donation Drive
Want to make an even bigger impact? Turn Earth Week into a community effort. Invite friends, family, or neighbors to join you in a neighborhood donation drive. Gather gently used items from nearby homes and make one group trip to your local Goodwill donation center. This is especially helpful during spring cleaning season and is a great way to celebrate sustainability together.
Donate Electronics for Free
Old electronics should not end up in the trash. Goodwill offers free e-cycling all year round at donation centers, making it easy to responsibly recycle items like:
- flat screen TVs
- computers and monitors
- printers
- tablets
- cameras
- cables and wires
- phones and accessories
- and more!
By working with Dell Reconnect, Goodwill accepts a wide variety of devices and helps ensure materials are responsibly processed.

Join a Local Cleanup
Another meaningful way to celebrate Earth Day is by participating in a local cleanup event. Many communities host neighborhood cleanups during Earth Week. Joining one is a great way to meet neighbors while helping beautify local parks, streets, and public spaces. You can even organize your own cleanup with family, friends, or coworkers.
Choose Reusables Every Day
Small habits add up. Using a refillable water bottle, coffee mug, or reusable shopping bags can significantly reduce single-use waste over time.
Bringing reusable bags when you shop is one easy habit that helps reduce plastic use and supports a cleaner environment.
Plant Something New
Planting a tree, flowers, or even a small garden is another wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day. Plants help support wildlife, improve air quality, and make our communities more beautiful.

Shop Sustainably
One of the easiest ways to make every day Earth Day is by shopping secondhand. Before buying something new, check Goodwill first. Whether you are refreshing your wardrobe, decorating your home, or searching for everyday essentials, shopping secondhand helps keep quality items in circulation longer.
Every purchase helps reduce waste while funding mission programs that support our local community. Sustainable shopping truly is shopping that does more GOOD.
Make Every Day Earth Day
Earth Day is a reminder that small actions can create lasting change. Whether you donate, host a neighborhood drive, shop secondhand, recycle electronics, or bring your own reusable bags, every choice makes a difference.
Join us in celebrating our planet today and every day. Donate to Goodwill and do GOOD!
